Durham-Ellis Pecan Company, which started 81 years ago in Comanche, made the list of seven finalists in this year’s Texas Association of Business’ Small Business of the Year 2008-2009.
Durham Pecan Co. was started in 1928 by W.M. Durham, Sr. It has been said that his mission for the company was to provide the freshest and highest quality pecans. And wanting to help people earn some money during this economic stressful time in 1928, he set up long tables for workers to shell pecans by hand. They were paid after the meat of the pecans they had shelled were weighed.
In 1996, Odie Dollins purchased Durham Pecan Company.
Today, the modern, automated company processes and distributes nuts to commercial operations worldwide, including Luby’s, Mrs. Baird’s and Blue Bell.
In 1998, Durham and his partner Paul Leonard purchased Ellis Pecan Co. of Ft. Worth which marketed pecans to grocers and supermarkets, as well as establishing retail outlets in Comanche, Fort Worth and Goldthwaite.
Durham-Ellis Pecan Co. encompasses three city blocks and has over 130,000 square feet. The plant shells approximately 10 million pounds of pecans. The company’s also roasts millions of pounds of other kinds of nuts.
Handpicking continues to be used in combination with the company’s state of the art equipment to shell, roast and package their products.
Durham-Ellis Pecan Co. continues to expand operations, upgrading facilities and exporting to overseas markets.

Flag and Flagpole Supply, Beaumont; Sherrie McCall, Chocolate Angel, Richardson; Joe Dee Brooks, Allied Oilfield Machine and Pump, Levelland; Amber Anthony and Ashley Rosilier, Run Gear Run, San Antonio; Shannon McCollum, Shannon Pools, Nacogdoches; and PJ Ellison, Ellison’s Green houses, Brenham.
TAB was founded in 1922. It represents 140,000 small and large Texas employers and 200 local chambers of commerce.
